Competence Center Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg (KQCBW)

Advancing the key technology of quantum computing in Germany: That is the goal of the nationwide Fraunhofer Competence Network Quantum Computing. The Competence Center Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg (KQCBW) is a central element in this endeavor.

Several Fraunhofer Institutes and research partners from politics, science and industry are pooling their expertise in the development and application of quantum computers for research, education, development, services and production in the KQCBW. They address the information technology, medical technology, chemistry, finance, mechanical engineering, production, automotive and logistics sectors, which are particularly important in Baden-Württemberg. The KQCBW is also actively involved in the expansion of Baden-Württemberg as a quantum technology location as part of the office of the state initiaitve QuantumBW.

The coordination of the Competence Center Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg is carried out at the Fraunhofer IAF together with the Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart.

Project Competence Center for Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg 2025–2027 (KQCBW25)

Since 2020, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism has been supporting the development of the KQCBW and the collaborative projects coordinated by the competence center. The goal is to tap into application potential and competitive advantages for companies in the state. To achieve this, the KQCBW25 project is continuing the research work begun in previous projects. Among other things, the project focuses on the implementation of a service-oriented KQCBW Quantum Cloud, hardware benchmarking, error mitigation and quantum error correction, algorithms for quantum chemistry and materials science, and the analysis of economically relevant applications.

About KQCBW

The KQCBW was founded in 2020. Within the Competence Center, the first IBM quantum computer on German soil was installed and made available to industrial companies, SMEs, startups, and academic institutions for application-oriented use. In doing so, pioneering work was carried out in the development of quantum computing, and key competencies were built up at the two institutes Fraunhofer IAF and Fraunhofer IAO.

From 2020 to March 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Baden-Württemberg supported the establishment of the KQCBW and the joint projects coordinated by the Competence Center with a total of 40 million euros. The further development and continuation of the KQCBW is being funded by the Ministry with around 20 million euros for the period from 2024 to 2028.

Since its founding, the Competence Center for Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg has developed into one of the most powerful quantum computing ecosystems in Germany. Over the course of its project phases, the KQCBW has brought together and networked six Fraunhofer institutes, 17 additional university, college, and non-university institutes across the state, as well as around 60 associated corporate partners. Together, a unique infrastructure and expertise in the field of applied quantum computing were built up. The research and development work of the KQCBW has achieved significant progress in various application areas: from quantum simulation in materials science and the natural sciences, to requirements for powerful and reliable hardware environments, to the programming of quantum algorithms for industrial applications. In addition, a quantum computing training program was established as part of the KQCBW, jointly developed by Fraunhofer IAO and Fraunhofer IAF.

The Competence Center for Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg actively contributes to the objectives of the state initiative QuantumBW and drives forward the state's quantum computing roadmap.

Fraunhofer IAF contributes research on improving the performance of entangled qubits and quantum memories. The aim is to increase the achievable computing times of quantum computers and reduce error rates by developing novel quantum hardware.

This is what we are working on:

  • Development of novel material structures and process technologies including analytics
  • Quality assurance of quantum electronic devices
  • Research into new assembly and connection techniques
  • Demonstration of powerful quantum memory and processing components
  • Siumaltion of use cases and programming of quantum algorithms
