In the framework of the Fraunhofer ATTRACT group HyMonPICs, a novel, compact platform for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in the mid-infrared range (MIR) is to be developed.

The Fraunhofer ATTRACT research group HyMonPICs is working on the development of a novel, compact platform for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in the mid-infrared range (MIR, range: approx. 3–25 µm). PICs integrate various photonic components onto a single chip to form a fully functional, miniaturized photonic system characterized by higher energy efficiency, compactness and mobility. Promising application areas include medical technology, environmental monitoring, food analysis and process control.

The platform is intended to significantly shorten the development and manufacturing times for PICs in the future and enable broad access to high-quality MIR PICs. To date, the manufacturing of PICs has been very complex, and the usable wavelength range is often limited to 1.6 µm. The planned modular concept is designed to support monolithic, heterogeneous and hybrid integrated systems to flexibly serve a variety of applications.

OBJECTIVES

Development of a modular PIC system for MIR and LWIR with a transmission window of 3 µm up to at least 12 µm

  • Reducing the complexity and costs of PIC design, fabrication and application
  • Development of low-loss and miniaturized MIR waveguides through heterogeneous, hybrid and monolithic integration
  • Demonstration of the versatility and transferability of the concept through further technological development (other wavelengths, higher output powers etc.)
