Fraunhofer IAF receives €10 million from state and federal governments for new research building

12/21/2021 - More space for research on quantum technologies

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics, Labor and Tourism is providing the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with a total of 19 million euros in basic funding and for investments in 2021. This was announced by Economics Minister Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut in Stuttgart. Nine million euros of the funding is for the state's share of the research organization's basic funding. Ten million euros have been allocated for various investments in buildings and equipment for the Fraunhofer institutes in Baden-Württemberg. Of this amount, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF will receive 5 million euros for a new research building and initial equipment. The Freiburg institute will receive an additional 5 million euros in funding from the federal government for the new building project.

New research building for quantum technologies

The new building will create urgently needed workplaces for scientists researching and developing in the field of quantum technologies. Based on materials such as diamond and SiC, Fraunhofer IAF researches components and systems for applications in quantum sensing and quantum computing.

The researchers also advance the system integration of the components and develop hardware and software solutions for second-generation quantum systems. To broaden the fields of application and facilitate the integration of quantum systems into industrial processes, Fraunhofer IAF is also working on optimizing quantum computers and quantum sensors for applications in quantum chemistry, logistics and medical technology.
