KoNet - Technologies for the communication network of tomorrow

© Fraunhofer HHI

Flexible and reliable communication and data connections are fundamental constituents of our today’s digital, technologized and mobile private life and business world. The mobility of the users and the constantly growing amounts of data require a significant expansion of mobile radio networks, in which the increase of data capacity in the entire networks is of utmost importance.

A promising option for increasing the data capacity is the additional use of radio technology at high carrier frequencies up to the THz range (> 100 GHz). The project KoNet aims to develop the THz radio technology itself as well as an optimized network management concept, which is capable of an effective integration of THz technologies in upcoming convergent networks.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the project is to develop THz based radio technology at high carrier frequencies (> 100 GHz) and to study its use in mobile and stationary application scenarios.

For this purpose:

  • a complete system for THz based radio transmission with > 100 GHz carrier frequency and connection to fiber optic technology is to be developed and implemented under laboratory conditions.
  • concepts and algorithms for adaptive control of heterogeneous networks, including THz based radio technologies and other network technologies, are to be developed.
