Rough conditions prevail in hot rolling mills: High temperatures, dust and mist in the air make the use of optical measuring systems difficult. A novel, robust and radar-based measurement technology is therefore the goal of the "RAD-Energy" project. For the robust and high-resolution acquisition of distances, positions and speeds in flat steel, the new application is to measure lengths and speeds precisely and without contact. The focus is on energy and resource efficiency as well as the accuracy of the measurement. With its expertise, Fraunhofer IAF is involved in the development of radar sensor technology. The radar systems developed at Fraunhofer IAF have particularly high bandwidths (92-100 GHz), making very precise measurements possible.
