High bit-rate E-band satellite links

The frequency bands in the E-band of 71 – 86 GHz offer the necessary bandwidth to enable sustainable and scalable multi-gigabit communication systems. Thus, Fraunhofer IAF develops active electronic transmit and receive components on the basis of monolithic integrated millimeter wave circuits, which allow for extremely low form and weight factors, low power consumption as well as simple methods for beam tracking and alignment.

Goals
  • Development of cryogenic ultra-low noise amplifiers and receivers in metamorphic HEMT technology
  • Increase of the transmit power by powerful and efficient gallium nitride based power amplifiers
  • Highest spectral efficiency through use of direct demodulation using carrier recovery or Costas Loops
  • Demonstration of data rates >10 Gbit/s over a distance of several kilometers and first experimental investigation of different climatic conditions, such as humidity, fog or wind, on the transmission
