About Fraunhofer IAF

And action! For the first time, it is now also possible to gain insights into our research work with our short film. Take a look behind the scenes of Fraunhofer IAF with us.

Diamond tips for the quality control of hard drives

Scientists at Fraunhofer IAF are developing highly sensitive diamond sensors, applying electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The sensor checks whether a magnetic field exists or not, thereby identifying faulty hard drive areas.

Detecting tiny magnetic fields with diamond sensors

To identify magnetic fields a nitrogen atom is being integrated into a tiny diamond tip. With the help of electrons of the emerging nitrogen vacancy center even smallest magnetic fields can be detected through ESR spectroscopy.

Efficient electronics in mobile networks

The special physical properties of GaN make it possible to reduce the energy demand of the mobile communication base stations down to a quarter.
